Lessons from a Biblical Leadership Example on Maintaining Focus
Recently, I was having lunch with a ministry leader when our conversation turned to the long list of ministry tasks that often go undone. Immediately, a scripture came to mind: Acts 6:1-7. From that conversation, I leave these thoughts with you:;
The Biblical Blueprint for Delegation
In Acts 6:1-7 we read about a problem in the early Church. The believers had committed to living communally, sharing resources. A breakdown occurred, however: The widowed women were not receiving their daily distribution of food.
Rather than trying to handle the issue themselves, the leaders wisely delegated the task to trusted, qualified individuals who were full of wisdom and integrity. This allowed the leaders to remain focused on their primary responsibilities: prayer and ministry. The result? The problem was resolved and the community continued to grow.
This passage is a powerful illustration of leadership in action. It is also a timeless reminder that effective leaders know when and how to delegate.
Three Questions to Guide Delegation
If you are unsure whether a task should stay on your plate or be delegated, ask yourself:
Can the task be accomplished without my direct leadership?
Can a team member be trained to take it over?
Can I create a process others can follow to complete this reliably?
If the answer is yes to these questions, it may be time to delegate.
Systematize For Success
One of the greatest supports to effective delegation is continuity. Leaders should develop documented systems and processes, both for themselves and their teams.
This includes:
Clear procedures for how key operations are handled
Step-by-step instructions for recurring tasks
Guidelines that allow someone to step in during your absence
Whether your running a church, business, or other organization, system allow your vision to continue, even when you are not in the room.
Visionaries Don't Build Alone
Time is limited. Leaders must use it wisely.
The truth is: Rome was not built in a day, and it was not built by one person either.
As a senior leader, you may not always be the builder. Sometimes, your greatest responsibility is to be the visionary, delegating and overseeing rather than doing everything yourself. Thankfully, leadership tools, from frameworks to AI tools, make it easier than ever to delegate. When you need a partner in execution, that is where we come in.
